A black bear that was tranquilized by state conservation officialsWednesday afternoon after wandering through the backyards ofChickahominy came from New Jersey, a town official said. Conservation Director Denise Savageau said state officials told her the bear, which officials removedfrom a backyard behind Spring Street, had a tag on it placed thereby New Jersey officials. “Bears don’t know borders,” said Savageau, who didn’t know what New Jersey department affixed the tag to the small bruin. “That’s just where the bearhappened to be tagged and born.

That doesn’t mean it’s going tostay there.” Neither she nor Dennis Schain , a spokesman for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, knew if the bear was male or femaleor how old it is. Schain said the bear is young, but old enough tomove out on its own. The animal will be placed in a state forest, said Schain, adding that he is waiting for more information fromthe state agency’s wildlife officials. Barbara Guasco , a resident at 56 Spring St., said she was startled to learn therewas a bear in her neighborhood shortly after she returned to herhome around 2 p.m.

Guasco saw a police officer near the rental property she ownsbehind her home and stayed on her porch because she was concernedabout what was happening. A neighbor came by and told her the police activity was due to abear. “You don’t expect to come home and have somebody say there was abear in the backyard,” Guasco said with a laugh. She walked up to the end of the short lane to the rental propertyto see if she could spot the bear, but couldn’t see it because itwas up in a tree a short distance away. IPL Laser Machine

Megan McLeod , a tenant at the property, said she could hear noise from whatsounded like people banging on things, but didn’t know what wasgoing on until her son Aidan, 13, arrived home after 3 p.m. “I kept on looking out, but I didn’t know what the commotion wasall about,” she said, laughing. The bear, which was first spotted in the area Wednesday morning, was tranquilized and removed by DEEP representatives around 2:30p.m., police said. The animal posed no threat to residents or animals, said police, who contained the bear until wildlife officials arrived. China Diode Laser Hair Removal Equipment

Jeffrey Cordulack , communication manager for Audubon Greenwich, said bears do notusually pose a threat to humans. “While not commonly seen in Greenwich, black bears are a part ofthe natural New England landscape,” he said, adding that the lastblack bear sighting he is aware of occurred on the Audubon propertylast summer. Last month, there was a report of a possible bear appearance inbackcountry after a homeowner said there was some damage to hisproperty when he was away. Six bear sightings were reported over a six-week period in the areaof Riversville Road and John Street two years ago, including one inwhich a woman saw a large bear near her backyard pool. Savageau said bears do spend time in Greenwich as they search forfood. China Yag Laser Hair Removal Machine

“We had a bear doing some dumpster diving two years ago in thebackcountry,” she said. “They will eat everything. They areomnivores. They will follow the food supply. It is all about food.” Male bears can travel up to 200 miles from where they were born asthey search for food, Savageau said.

The capture of the black bear came a year and a day after amountain lion was spotted on the Brunswick School ‘s King Street campus. The mountain lion is believed to be the sameone that was killed less than a week later by a motor vehicle nearMilford. Officials said the big cat originated from the Midwest. Despite bears’ relatively infrequent interaction with humans inConnecticut, Cordulack provided some tips for residents whoencounter them.

“Don’t run from a bear unless safety is nearby and you are sure youcan reach it,” he said. “Bears can run 35 miles an hour.” If a bear walks toward you, Cordulack suggested waving your handsover your head to identify yourself as a human and talking to thebear in a low voice. Don’t make eye contact with the bear when trying to scare it away,Cordulack warned, and don’t refer to the bear as “bear.” Bearsaccustomed to human interaction may associate the word “bear” withbeing fed, Cordulack said. People should also keep their garbage cans in a protected place andbring bird feeders inside if a black bear has been spotted in thearea, he said.

“Bears are known to follow their noses,” he said. Finally, if you come upon a bear cub, be wary, Cordulack said. “If someone sees a cub, they should move out of the area as fast asthey can,” he said.; 203-625-4434.
