Godspell star Anna Maria Perez de Tagle made her spectacular concert debutaboard the Hornblower Hybrid last week with about 400 of herfriends, family members, supporters and fans watching the show. It was a star-studded affair as Anna Maria s Godspell co-stars Corbin Bleu, Wallace Smith, Nick Blaemire, Eric Krop, andGeorge Salazar, and Filipino-American television and film actor andsinger Sam Milby joined her onstage. It is such an amazing experience being with all of you tonightand I am very thankful because this is a very special night, AnnaMaria told the Asian Journal when we cornered her just minutesafter the concert. Six months ago, the singer celebrated a personal milestone, her21st birthday. Her parents Artie and Evelyn knew how much sheloved boats and ships that they threw a grand birthday partyonboard a ship that cruised along the Hudson River for about fourhours.
What s with the fascination for ships, we asked. Anna Marialet out a hearty laugh and remarked, I love ships. I might buyone someday, then quipped, Just kidding. Her enormous love for cruising was that great that when theopportunity to hold her debut concert on board the HornblowerHybrid presented itself, she did not think twice.
What s better than a relaxing evening, chilling with family andfriends while cruising along the Hudson River and listening to goodmusic? she said, still a little high from the energy ofperforming before a captivated captive audience. The repertoire was quite an eclectic mix, which was good, becausethe songs showed her range as a singer and a performer. Anna Maria opened the show with Love You, I Do , a song Jennifer Hudson sang in the 2006 film Dreamgirls. The young Disney star turned Broadway sensation upped the ante bysinging Ceelo Green s Forget You followed by No Air, a duet with Nick Blaemire. It was fitting that the singer s idol Lea Salonga was on the frontrow as Anna Maria gave her a fitting tribute by performing songsmade famous by the Broadway thespian. Anna Maria shiftedeffortlessly from I Dreamed a Dream to On My Own and ending it with I d Give My Life for You from Miss Saigon . Eric Michael Krop then went onstage and continued the Miss Saigon tribute by singing Last Night of the World with Anna Maria. Anna Maria and fellow Fil-Am George Salazar then came out andexercised their comedic chops, singing I Got You, Babe and channeling their inner Sonny and Cher complete with costumesand facial hair. Sam Milby made his last public appearance in New York and performedthe now classic Lady Antebellum song I Need You Know, much to the delight of the predominantly Filipino audience. Jude Children s Research Hospital (the benefitconcert s beneficiary) before singing Ikaw, the only Tagalog song on the repertoire. She dedicated the song toher special guest, her cousin Neil Thomson, the reason why shestaged the show in the first place. When Thomson, who is battling arare form of cancer, joined the singer onstage, she was overcomewith emotion. Everyone in the audience was teary-eyed after thisnumber. Corbin Bleu then rocked the stage with his own solo number,performing Wake Me Up, Before You Go G o and a duet with Anna Maria I Just Can t Stop Loving You.
Bleu replaced erstwhile Jesus Christ on Godspel l, Hunter Parrish a couple of weeks ago. Anna Maria then called her manager Kevin Jonas, Sr. and theyperformed a duet singing the Jonas Brothers hit When You Look Me in the Eyes , which was penned by Jonas, Sr. himself.
The singer ended her show with a rousing rendition of Lady Gaga s Marry the Nigh t and called on her guests to sing Don t Go Breaking My Heart with her when the audience screamed for an encore. The show complemented the breath-taking views of the iconicManhattan skyline, taken all in while on board the very modernHornblower Hybrid, and at the same time raising funds for a verygood cause.
